Coloring online or printable — what to choose

Pros and cons of coloring on screen and on paper — when to reach for a tablet and when for crayons.

Coloring on paper

Crayons and a printout develop fine motor skills, grip and pressure control — a screen can't replace that. Paper work is tangible: you can hang it, gift it and store it.

Coloring online

On-screen coloring tempts with an unlimited palette, undoing mistakes and no mess. Handy for travel and great with no printer — though it doesn't train grip like a crayon.

Screen time

For the youngest, experts advise limiting screen time. Online coloring can be part of it, but shouldn't fully replace play with real crayons.

Best of both worlds

You don't have to choose rigidly. Online suits travel and quick play, while a printout at home suits calm, developmental crayon coloring at the table.
